How Racism and Colonialism Still Rule the World
In his groundbreaking new book, "How Racism and Colonialism Still Rule the World", acclaimed historian and professor Dr. Ibram X. Kendi exposes the insidious and enduring legacy of racism and colonialism in our world today. Through a rigorous analysis of historical and contemporary events, Kendi argues that these twin evils are deeply embedded in our institutions, ideologies, and cultures, and continue to shape our societies in profound and often hidden ways.

The Historical Roots of Racism and Colonialism
Kendi traces the origins of racism and colonialism to the 15th century, when European explorers began to encounter and conquer non-European peoples. As Europeans established colonial empires around the world, they developed a system of racial hierarchy that justified their domination of indigenous populations. This system of racialized oppression was reinforced through laws, policies, and ideologies that defined whiteness as superior to all other races.
The legacy of colonialism is still deeply felt today. Former colonies continue to grapple with the economic, political, and social consequences of colonial rule. Moreover, the racist ideologies that underpinned colonialism continue to shape our societies, leading to discrimination and inequality in housing, education, employment, and other areas of life.
The Pervasive Impact of Racism in Modern Society
Kendi argues that racism is not simply a matter of individual prejudice or bias, but rather a systemic force that operates at multiple levels of society. He identifies three main types of racism: interpersonal racism, institutional racism, and structural racism.
Interpersonal racism refers to the individual beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors that perpetuate racial stereotypes and discrimination. Institutional racism refers to the policies and practices of institutions that produce and maintain racial inequality, even when they are not explicitly motivated by racist intentions. Structural racism refers to the deeply embedded systems of power and privilege that advantage white people and disadvantage people of color, regardless of their individual beliefs or intentions.
Kendi provides numerous examples of how these different forms of racism manifest in our society today. For example, he discusses the racial disparities in school discipline, arrest rates, and income levels, and shows how these disparities are rooted in systemic racism.
The Urgent Need for Anti-Racist Activism
Kendi concludes his book with a call for urgent action to dismantle racism and colonialism. He argues that we need to address both the individual and systemic forms of racism, and that we need to do so through a combination of education, activism, and policy change.
Kendi's book is a powerful indictment of racism and colonialism, and it provides a clear roadmap for how we can work towards a more just and equitable world. It is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the true nature of racism and its enduring impact on our society.
