About the Author
Ben Jonson was born in London in 1572. He was the son of a bricklayer, and he was educated at Westminster School. He began his career as an actor, but he soon turned to writing. His first play, Every Man in His Humour, was produced in 1598. He went on to write over 50 plays, as well as a number of poems and masques.
Jonson was a close friend of William Shakespeare, and he is considered one of the greatest poets of the English Renaissance. His work is characterized by its wit, intelligence, and learning, and he is considered one of the most important figures in English literature.
About the Editors
- David Bevington is Professor of English at the University of Chicago. He is the author of many books on Renaissance literature, including From Mankind to Marlowe: Growth of Structure in the Popular Drama of Tudor England and Tudor Drama and Politics.
- Martin Butler is Emeritus Professor of English at the University of Oxford. He is the author of many books on Renaissance literature, including Ben Jonson: The Poems and Ben Jonson and the Uses of Abundance.
