Excerpt
John Fahey was born in Washington, D.C., in 1939. He began playing guitar at an early age, and by the time he was in his teens, he was already performing in local folk clubs. In 1963, Fahey released his debut album, Death Chants, Breakdowns & Military Waltzes. The album was a critical and commercial success, and it helped to establish Fahey as one of the leading figures in the folk revival of the 1960s.
In the years that followed, Fahey continued to release a steady stream of albums, including The Great San Bernardino Birthday Party & Other Excursions (1964),Blind Joe Death (1964),and The Transfiguration of Blind Joe Death (1965). These albums showcased Fahey's unique blend of folk, blues, and avant-garde influences, and they helped to cement his reputation as one of the most innovative guitarists of his generation.
In the late 1960s, Fahey began to experiment with more avant-garde sounds. He released albums such as The Yellow Princess (1969) and America (1970),which featured extended improvisations and tape loops. These albums were not as commercially successful as Fahey's earlier work, but they helped to establish him as a pioneer of avant-garde guitar music.
Fahey continued to release albums throughout the 1970s and 1980s, but his output slowed down in the 1990s. He died in 2001 at the age of 61.
