King arrived in Memphis on March 28, 1968, at the request of the city's sanitation workers. The workers had been on strike for two months, demanding better wages, benefits, and working conditions. King quickly became involved in the strike, leading marches and rallies and speaking out against the city's intransigence. He also met with city officials and business leaders in an attempt to negotiate a settlement.

The negotiations were difficult and protracted. The city was unwilling to meet the workers' demands, and King was unwilling to compromise on his principles. As the strike dragged on, tensions mounted and violence flared. On April 4, 1968, King was assassinated by James Earl Ray, a white supremacist.

King's death sent shockwaves through the nation and around the world. It also led to a renewed commitment to the civil rights movement. The Memphis Strike was a major turning point in the movement, and it helped to pave the way for the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1968.

The Memphis Strike: Martin Luther King's Last Campaign is a powerful and moving account of one of the most important events in the civil rights movement. It is a must-read for anyone interested in King's life and work, the civil rights movement, or American history.
